Beware of faulty parallelism if you use one of the following constructs: Earlier in this chapter, we learned that the increasing variety of sentences gives interest to a piece of writing and makes the reading process more enjoyable for others. Using a mixture of sentence lengths and patterns in an essay is an important writing technique. However, it is equally important to avoid variations within individual sentences. A strong sentence consists of balanced parts that all have the same structure. In this section, we will look at ways to establish a balanced sentence structure through parallelism. Note the error in comparison between occupations (“Engineering Management” and “software development”) and people (“service technicians” and “salespeople”).
